Governor Abiodun Has Improved Educational Infrastructure But He Can Do More - Ogun NUT

The Nigerian Union of Teachers, Ogun State Wing, has applauded the administration of Prince Dapo Adiodun for providing additional infrastructure in public schools but stressed the need for the State Government to engage additional ten thousand teachers for the state work force.
This was the position of the Chairman, Nigerian Union of Teacher, Ogun State Wing, Comrade Noah Sewakanu, in his Abeokuta office during a courtesy visit. He also spoke on other sundry issues as it affects education in the state. Excerpts:

Q: How can you rate the educational sector of the state government and do you see the employment of five thousand teachers in public schools as a blessing?
A: Well, in fairness to God and to us all in the NUT   Prince Dapo Abiodun has been trying his best in the educational sector of the state. I will like to stress my point on physical infrastructure and the information made available to us. His administration has renovated several structures in public schools, if you go round the state you will see the yellow roof revolution that is the handwork of Mr. Governor and this has helped to improve the quality of education in the state.A lot of incentives were made to public schools in the state geared towards positioning the educational sector on the pedestal of growth.

Having said that, the Governor has equally engaged additional five thousand teachers in the state, yes this is a blessing because it will go a long way to ensure that pupils have access to qualitative  education in the state.Normally, the civil service rule stipulates that a civil servant retires after 35years in service or 65 years retirement age and this serves as a replacement of teachers that have retired from service and those that have gone to seek greener pastures. When public schools are well equipped with competentteachers, pupils will be mentored for the industrial sector. The Governor needs to employ additional ten thousand teachers considering the numbers of schools we have in the state and they should be employed permanently with good remuneration. However, palliatives should be given to teachers like their counterparts in the public sector while other welfare measures should be introduced.

Q: What is your message to the Governor?
A: He is a listening governor and I will like to urge him to look into other areas of challenges of teachers, more importantly the contributory pension scheme, I will urge him to do the needful because if teachers are well remunerated  they will be encouraged to mentor pupils to achieve greatness in life.

Q: What are your recommendations to the parents and government as regards social vices in the country?
A: As parents we should all train our wards by giving them necessary moral upbringing.I will also urge the government to have a monitoring team that will be visiting public schools in the state to enforce discipline.
